I have thought about removing the "bulb" from it and hooking it up to some kind of vacuum pump. Would need some kind of collector in the line to the pump to collect the solder. I think they use plain cotton in the pro rigs.

I'd try to find a way to test it before investing in a pump. Continuous vac on a light weight low power bulb type desolder iron is likely to cool the tip too much for it to work.
