        By hand. I'm told that the first six pulls limbers up the engine.

That is to say, it "breaks" free any moving parts that are held in 
place by congealed oil.
That step alone reduces friction and gives the starter more umphf. 
This in turn allows more cranking if needed. Of course if you have 
an updraft you might want to have an extinguisher handy.
