I believe the side seal surface is cast iron and the cooling is the same i.e. water.

I had assumed the same things, but I didn't see anywhere that looked like the two pieces were joined. I was ready to be even more impressed in his machining skill if he managed to machine those water passages in a one piece housing :-)
I'm starting to get pissed (American, not Australian) at the whole gyrocopter community, and have almost decided to forget about building one. I'm still unnaturally interested in playing with the single rotor engine though, so I'll continue messing with the one I have, using a test stand rather than an aircraft for now. I just wish I had the ability and equipment to do serious machining. I've got lots of wacky ideas, and enough housings to keep me busy for quite a while.
Maybe I can resist building anything else until a perfect LSA aircraft comes out. An RV-12 might make a dandy single rotor platform :-)
