Well, it runs better, but not good yet.  I think Ernest and Al were on the right track.  I have the 6 coils in a row, and had tied up all their leads into a neat bundle that extended to the back (or in our case, front) of the engine.  Well, separating those leads made the timing light show it is firing where it is supposed to-120 degrees apart, with only an occasional blip in the wrong place.

quick question!  why would it fire occasionaly in the worng spot any idea what would cause that?
