I took it out because yesterday I flew around the patch with my new = and much bigger scoop and had higher temps and felt end of the oil cooler = and it was cool to the touch. So I started to think something wasn't letting = the oil through the cooling coils/fins. I thought removing the thermostat = would open up the core - guess I've got that backwards!=20 When I had my engine being rebuilt last month I flushed the oil cooler = with mineral spirits and took out the thermostat and tested it in the kitchen = for correct operation. It opened (grew or shrunk - can't remember) at about = 175F if I recall. Whatever Haynes says it's supposed to do - it did.
