To answer the question directly, I would estimate that I spent somewhere between $15k to $20k on the RV-3 engine project.  I made Rich promise never to tell me what all the receipts add up to :-)

Rich, did you happen to add up all the receipts?  Care to give us a figure off-line or with a big "RUSTY DON'T READ THIS WARNING"?

I really wasn't trying to get into the "which is better".  Just trying to get at the narrow question of which cost more.  I thought you would probably be the best subject to ask, because your experience is recent, and from what I've read on this list, you seemed to have more dollars  to spend on it than cents 8*).  I thought your numbers would be on the high end of the spectrum. With the Lycoming your total comes to 25,900 up to the prop.  Does your estimated figure for the rotary include the prop?  I'd like to exclude that, because it varies so wildly and doesn't differ in fuction between the engine types.  In fact, let's narrow the question down to a little more focus so that we can get a reasonable ball park comparison figure.  Let's exclude labor, and just include what is necessary to make the engine able to turn a prop, leaving off sensors/monitors and such.   If we can use Rusty's Lycoming cost as a typical figure, what would other rotary installers estimate their installed cost to be?  I'll be starting my installation "real soon now", and I'll keep very close records, just to make the point.  I'm the cheapskate in the bunch (sorry, Tracy.  Once of the cheapskates 8*), so I hope to be on the other end of the spectrum from Rusty.
