Well, not intentionally, Bob. {:>)
. Yes, that was an interesting experiment to say the
least. After I had installed the paddle wheel discs in the muffler
housing, I fired it up and went for a flight. After the flight, one of the
airport bums told me that it sounded just like I had a turbine on take
off. Well, I laughed and made reference to the rotary being a poor mans'
turbine. Little did I know at the time, that those paddle wheels had
already broken loose on their shaft and were spinning like mad.
While perhaps a "cool" sound, the down side was that the
windmilling discs choked the exhaust flow at around 6000 rpm. Found all of
this out on way down to Tracy. Took it apart there and took all but
two discs out of each tube and then Tracy arc welded the disc to the
shaft. They lasted about two weeks that way before the exhaust pulses
pounded them loose. You could see where the disc has spun as the threads
were worn off the shaft and the insides of the muffler tube was burnished by the
tips of the spinning discs.
Guess if I just some way of injecting gasoline between the
two discs I could have had power augmentation {:>)

Ed didn't
you build a turbo in your exhaust system, and Tracy went and welded it up so
that it wouldn't turn? {:>)

Thomas, while there is probably more hydrocarbon
(fuel) being ejected from the combustion chamber ports of a rotary than a
non-race reciprocating engine , I think you will find that its already
being burned in the header pipes - that is one of the reasons for the
Rotary's hotter exhaust. So great idea, but I believe you will find
its already ignited in the 1700F+ temps of the exhaust.
Humm, so if its already ignited, then all we need to
do is shape a rocket reaction chamber shape and get additional
thrust...... On the other hand, I think a turbo charger would probably
be a more effective use of that exhaust energy. But, that's just my
opinion and it might be interesting to see if any thrust would result.
Monty???.
