Here are some photos of what I was able to do with duct opening size once I understood the design objective.  I was able to reduce the duct opening from 24 sq inches to 10 sq inches.  There was a 5 deg F rise in coolant temp, but probably less cooling drag.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
This photo show my truncated Streamline duct contours a  bit better.  I simply filled in the shell of the old duct show above with foam and shaped it until it met my contour templates.
 
 
 
These contour templates shows the rapid expansion (pressure recovery) typical of  the Streamline duct. Normally however, the entrance would be much longer and some pressure recovery is loss as a results of the truncation.  The extreme  of the flair was actually at the edges of the core surface.
