Dunno if it's important or not, but in the past few months, I've
generated a 35 gal barrel full of 304 SS chips, in random lengths up
to 20", about .010" to .020" thick.  They're available if someone
wants them for experimenting.  If we knew a specific thickness was
required for survivablility of the packing, I could hog some of my
rough cuts up to about .050" (although I don't know if chips that
thick will curl as nicely.)

The case is ¼” mild steel, I believe, so there would be a weight penalty off the shelf.  Maybe these innards and a SS can.
