Joe,
The I/C's I mentioned earlier are still on ebay, P/N ULN2429A, ebay item
no. 7545438956, or search on "fluid level sensors".  You can get a lot
of 25 for $5.50 + s+h.  I have no idea if these will work in oil, but
the price is right and you should be able to retro fit it without
removing the pan.

I didn't read anything about a float.  I do see a red thing at the top
of the probe that could be a float, I guess. I was assuming this was a
little more sophisticated...I.e. a capacitance probe.
