They were used in automotive applications for fluid sensors. As I recall, they were a simple on/off type device and used a single wire for signal. They were very cheap (< 10 cents/ea) as I recall, but would be a little more from Digi-key. I bought a few, but haven't decided where to use them. Maybe these would do the job (not sure if they will work in oil). I'll see if I can find the info I had bookmarked on this device. I was assuming this was a little more sophisticated...I.e. a capacitance probe.
