It looks to be a float type sensor, Joe.  That is, the trickle of oil will actually make it alarm sooner, not later.

In order to really find out if it works on a running engine
that is losing oil you'd have to run it out of oil and if it didn't
light up as advertised...well bad things happen.

 

They cover that on their web page.  Fill-up slowly and see how much oil it takes to make the light go off.  That is how much oil you'll have left in the sump after you get a warning.  It'll be tested every time you change your oil.

But this is still a 'digital' solution.  It doesn't give you any indication whether you have a slow leak or if your seal just blew and it's all over.  Dawn's new car will actually measure the oil in the sump.  Would it be possible to build one of Jim Weir's capacitive type probes on the end of the dipstick?  That would provide some information on how quickly the oil level is dropping.
