It's not about consumption, it's about leaks. Earlier on I had a partially blocked breather and oil was being forced out of the sump seal at about a quart and hour. The oil level sensor, which is hooked up to my voice warning system, told me (literally) that there was a problem. I landed one quart low and fixed the problem. Works for me.
