John,
Just received my participant's plaque today, so I
feel like a winner now. I believe I told everyone that the temps down low
were close to 100F and BUMPY. I stayed at 4500 MSL on the first 250+mile
leg, mostly for comfort (my wife was along), but OAT was still around 90F with a
30 KT headwind. Since the race is nearly 500 SM, I was forced to reduce
power to quite low levels to finish with more than air in the tanks.
Resulting ground speed was 142.37 mph. Elapsed time was 3:18 and we landed
with 4 gal remaining for 10.3 GPH. Might have been smarter to just go high
and lean to 8 or 9 GPH. There is always next year.:-)
If you figure MPH per Cubic Inch, I am Sooooo far
ahead they will never catch me! The 13B cranked out 1.8 mph/ci even at my
slow speed, vs the very fast Polen Special (my neighbor) who figures at .72
mph/ci. Do I sound like I am stretching for self respect
here?
To answer your actual question, the cooling was
marginal at those temps. Still don't know what makes my cooling less than
others with the same configuration (unless I just don't lie as well!).
Still envy Chuck Dunlap who has too much cooling!

Bill; I have been looking for your comments
on the race into Oshkosh from Dayton last Sunday, i.e. engine temperatures,
speed and fuel burn. I made about 8 passes to the flightline at Oshkosh
and missed everyone. Did talk with one of the Power Sport guys in a
RV from California and he stated that his cruise was 175 with a fuel burn of
10.3 gph, seems like alot of fuel at that speed. He was trying to
impress me that he had a 225 mph airplane. No comment on this from me as
my Tailwind is yet to run.
