Last time I corresponded direct with Francois, he
indicated that they had trouble to get their turbo-provider into gear to produce
their test turbos.
It seems Turbonetics (or their mother company) bought the
only aircraft turbo maker (would that be Rajay?) so these guys have everything
in their hands now!
---------
At some time I suggested to look into (heavy) truck
turbos, as these are built to work near top power for extended periods.
Francois was interested to look into this, but I didn't hear anything about this
anymore. (These turbos are of course way heavier than what we would like, but
for Mistral the matter was not weight at this time but the right configuration
of the turbo. Once that was found they always could go to make the huffer
lighter...)
That Turbonetics owns the only "certified aircraft turbo
maker" was stated by Francois:
Based on the Turbo discussions on this list and the
ability of Turbonetics to fine tune and custom make applications, I suggested to
use this "non-certified" source and once they have the turbo configured the way
they need, to go to one of the "certified" turbo maker and
tell them to " copy and certify" the test-piece.
Francois answered that there is only one
"certified aviation turbo" maker and it belongs to his
"non-certified"-source - Turbonetics!!
Probably not a good move to tell the same company to copy
their own product!!
As far as I know there will be turbo-versions of all
engines - 2- and 3-rotor, gas and Jet-A. Jet-A will be only a few lbs heavier
due to the heavier injection system. Power-levels are the same. The highest at
this time will be the turbo-3 rotor at 360 hp.

Dave,
Given that they are apparently going to be offering
higher HP configurations, I would bet there is a turbo in the future.
However, I'll bet the intake will be considerably different from their NA
configuration.

I find it interesting that after all of their
experimenting with injector positions - they chose to have all four very
close to the intake port.

I was tempted to pester
them directly, but it sounds like he'll post info when it's available,
so I'll leave him alone. If you see an update, please pass it
along.

Rusty you can see the fit on their web site www.mistralengines.com They fit very closely over
the top of the engine. The picture shows the old manifold which fits up
the same the new shape is slightly different of course.
Bill
Jepson The
other interesting thing is that there is now longer any room for the stock
turbo, which is something I thought that they were using for some of their
engines. Do you think they have decided to do away with the turbo all
together?
