Military retirement is a matter of election:
My dad had the option of taking 100% for the rest of his life, or 80% for the rest of his life with the guarantee that if he died, his spouse would get that 80% until she began to draw SS. Given that he died at at 53, it was a wise decision.

Almost all "normal" insurance policies are void if the insured acts as an aircrew member of a private aircraft.
Even the AOPA policy is void while flying an uncertificated aircraft. I don't remember whether the military pensions are set up to continue while the spouse lives or not, but I think they do - it might be a matter of election, though.
