Hi Bill,
At one point they did try the variable width pulley and belt arrangement
to connect the engine to the driveshaft.  I thought it was a very
ingenious design that just didn't work out for a number of reasons.
 
You are right about the harmonic vibration problems.  Wll worth reading.

The BD-5 didn't have a CVT. It did have an offset drive that redefined harmonic vibration problems though. Google BD-5 and Harmonic vibration and you wiill get a paper on vibration about the driveshaft problems they were having. VERY interesting reading.

Possible correction, in the article they said that they considered the snowmobile trans but it was way too heavy and didn't use it.
