Ed,
Thanks mate!
The mechanics tell me that the bypass
pellet is mainly for emission control, however it keeps it from the rotors,
it's keeping it from the bearings as well - which is a concern!
I notice some high performance machines take out
the bypass valve and plug the hole - seems like a good idea.
I remember that there was a Tracy Crook
modification but can't remember what it was or what it did exactly?

Hi George,
Don't know about the RX-8 engine, but simply
taking out the thermal pellet in the Rx-7 engine (without replacing it with a
plug) will fry your rotors. The plug is open when the engine first
is started to keep the oil away from the rotors so they get up to operating
temps (read less noxious emissions temps) quickly. As
the engine/oil heats up then the pellet closes a hole in the e shaft
which stops the oil from draining away from the rotors and now forces it to be
sprayed inside the rotors.
The Rx-8 could be different I suppose, but I
doubt it.

Dave and All,
I couldn't find that area on Tracy's site and
as the Series 6 has tapered bearing on the stationary gears, I'm wondering
of the RX8 has gone that way also.
Secondly, what again, is Tracy's
modification for the thermal pellet - I'm wondering if I can do
without the thermal pellet completely.

I
do not know the compatibilities between year models for the starters
across the RX line... To use Tracy's RD-1 Series PSRU's, you
need the 86-91 auto tranny flex plate, and the starter is from the
86-91 Manual trans, normally aspirated, engine. You may check with a parts
house to see how many different choices there really are.. but if it will
fir the 91 NA MT, it will fit the RD. Double check with
Tracy, but I believe the same eccentric shaft is used in the RX-8
(according to tracy's travails on his webpage at www.rotaryaviation.com (what's
new section). So.. same eshaft means same thermal
pellet. Dave

Is this so? What year(s)? Is the auto
starter different from the manual? Does the RX-7 thermal
pellet plug work, or is the RX-8 different?
Thanks again, in
advance :^)
