The Renesis is much more aircraft friendly to convert in my opinion. The exhaust is cooler and quieter, the water pump can be used with it's inlets and outlets as is (much more compact than the RX-7), the oil filler tube is easier to modify, if you can use part of the intake, it already has a good looking set of injectors and fuel rails- they were designed for the engine! Also the water pump and eccentric shaft are separated more than the older 13 Bs so you can fit a bigger under drive pulley on the water pump. I also like the flat serpentine belt for the water pump and alternator. IMHO they are more reliable and use less horsepower. It looks like you can use the stock 100 amp alternator inside a RV 7 cowl. The RX-8 ignition coils are real small and can be used as is according to Tracy. The intake throttle body may also be usable. Because it has the oil injection equipment you can go with 2 cycle oil injection without mixing oil and gas. The oil pan is very shallow so you have more room below the engine for cooling radiators if you go that route. The radiator oil return line banjo fitting and oil filter are mounted on a plate bolted to the engine. It probably can be modified and used also. The engine is slightly lighter than the RX-7 engine. I really recommend getting an engine from a wreck. I found mine by looking at carparts.com. There were about 10 engines listed priced from $2800 to 5K. You get a whole bunch of usable parts from a wreck that you don't get when you buy an engine that is built up. Fred at Conversion Concepts is making me a motor mount and the mounting plate will (according to Fred) hold either engine (RX-7 or 8). My mount should be ready by the end of May. I'm building an RV 7A and am finishing the canopy now. stjohn@openbar.com wrote: >Hi all, > >New member John Courte here. > >First, thanks for sharing your vast body of knowledge >so that newbies like myself can easily follow the trail. >Second, it's great to know that there is such a large >community of rotary-engine aviation enthusiasts and I >look forward to sharing experiences and learning new >things. > >I've been over Tracy Crook's conversion manual cover >to cover several times, and I have Bruce Turrentine's >overhaul video, second edition. I bought a Renesis from a wreck with 9500 miles. $2865 delivered form South Dakota to Texas.

Hi all,

New member John Courte here.

First, thanks for sharing your vast body of knowledge
so that newbies like myself can easily follow the trail.
Second, it's great to know that there is such a large
community of rotary-engine aviation enthusiasts and I
look forward to sharing experiences and learning new
things.

I've been over Tracy Crook's conversion manual cover
to cover several times, and I have Bruce Turrentine's
overhaul video, second edition. Currently I'm in the
planning stages of building a Van's RV-7, and the current
powerplant plan is to use a 6-port Renesis on a
Conversion Concepts mount. I want to get a nice,
easygoing 200hp out of the Renesis so I can be at
the top end of the power recommendations for the RV-7
without having to plumb turbos and intercoolers and
to keep it generally as simple as possible.

So with that, I'd just like to ask the list for suggestions,
thoughts and ideas, and a couple of specific questions.

One, is the oilpan bolt pattern on the Renesis the same as
the 13b? Will the Conversion Concepts mount work for the
Renesis without modification, and if not, what mods are
necessary?

Two, (big newbie question here), where do you actually GET
a Renesis? Is there a crate version available, and from
whom? Latest price? (On this list and the Canard Aviation
forum, it's been between $5700-$6200)
Has the RX8 been out long enough to make it worthwhile
sourcing one from auto wreckers, or are they being snapped
up by speed shops and racers?

Is the Renesis overkill? Can i get 200hp out of a n/a
13b without a lot of exotic modification? (I've been
reading the posts on injectors, intake tuning,
turbocharging, etc).

Thanks very much,

-John Courte
