I don't really feel that
I'm "getting away" with anything. While we do have some cold winters (this one
was quite mild.. and almost over), we don't live in our igloos all year long and
we do see some hot weather in the summer. Maybe I'll have time for a trip to
Southern BC this summer during some hot weather.
I'm not sure where Todd is
exactly, but for kicks, I went to the weather channels page, and looked up
the monthly average temps for the following locations. What's shown is the
temp for the hottest month in the summer.
Edmonton Alberta Canada-
73
Calgary
Canada- 74
Prince
George BC Canada- 71
Miami FL- 87
Tampa FL-
90
Jacksonville FL-
91
Pensacola FL-
91
As you can see, this isn't exactly fire
and ice. I was actually surprised to see that we're 4 degrees hotter on
average than south Florida.
In the
meantime Rusty is in a perfect position to begin this testing. He has his engine
rebuilt but not yet reinstalled? He also happens to have 2 DC EWP's. And he
lives down in the banana belt.
Well, the RV-3 engine
is installed, and I hope to have it running this weekend. I am in the
perfect position to test this though, since I have my EWP running in series with
the mechanical pump. I have in fact tested this on the ground,
by removing the single belt that runs the mechanical pump, and
alternator. Even for a short flight, I'm uncomfortable with the
thought of taking off with no alternator. During my break-in time, I
plan to measure currents required, and also verify the length of time that the
engine will run with no alternator. Perhaps I'll be willing to make a
short flight based on those results. No promises though.
My wife would not be as understanding about a 2nd dead stick
landing.
My only concern would be that I believe
Rusty already has one of the Mezeire adapter plates and would likely just use
this. I agree that it is a nice piece of work, but it looks (from the pic) a
little restrictive (no, lets not get into the restriction topic again:-). I
built my own to allow the use of 1.25" hose for inlet & outlet. Since Rusty
has recently demonstrated his ability to fabricate items such as this, it should
be an easy task.
No fabrication required. The latest Meziere
adapter has two AN-16 straight thread o-ring ports, which have a 1"
ID. I have two fittings that convert this to 1.25" hose nipples, which is
the same as the native Davies Craig fitting. I have these items for
use on the single rotor engine though. Eliminating the water pump
housing on the RV-3 engine would involve more work than I care to do at the
moment, but I will at some point get around to doing that. Maybe when the
e-shaft alternator rolls
around.
Todd Bartrim
(hoping to land my plane at home soon)
I now
officially hate you :-)
Cheers,
Rusty (hoping the girls kick Todd's butt in hockey
again)
