I think that the typical units are comparable to a water pump and alternator. The unique app may be a bit pricy but several orders from the group should bring it back down. Figure on around $250-300 if the complication isn't too high. Pure specialty items would be more. If you buy a motorcycle unit the initial cost will be less, but you can run the bill up fast if you need custom machining. It would depend on weather you need a backup or primary. Van's Lists the internally regulated unit at $250, it is a 60 amp unit though.
