In my opinion the Sonerai would be way down my list as far as planes to do engine testing with.  You want something that will land short, fly slow, and land easily in the event of an engine failure.  Something cheap but safe and preferably with a steel tube fuselage and a full enclosure (high wing).  There's usually lots of planes like this on Barnstormers for well under $10k.

I've just added a Sonerai-II to my list of unflyable projects/planes.  I really like the Sonerai, particularly the part about being able to fold the wings, and tow it on it's own gear.  This is a two place tandem, and I will plan to convert it to single place to allow more weight for engine and fuel.  Looks like the Slingshot will be going away.
