At Lynn Hanover’s urging, I went home last night and
cut apart an old Mazda 13B oil filter and a Bosch 3500, which is the Bosch
version of the PH8-A or HP-1. The “Mazda” filter was actually a
Pennzoil filter, so it may not be 100% identical to the factory filter. But,
its all I had. So, it will have to do. Both were used filters (drained), so
the weights may be a little off the mark. Filter medium of both filters appeared
similar, but the Pennzoil filter had a string tied around the filter element.
I suppose it was to keep it from blowing apart? More likely for facilitating
manufacture. The Bosch filter didn’t have the string.
Here’s the data on each:
13B filter:
Overall Weight 10.5 oz.
Filter Element
Weight 3.2 oz.
No. Pleats 57
Dimensions ½ x 2
Total Area 114 sq. in. (1/2 x 2 x 57 x
2)
Bosch filter:
Overall Weight 20.5 oz.
Filter Element
Weight 10.6 oz.
No. Pleats 57
Dimensions ¾ x 3 ¾
Total Area 320.6 sq. in. (3/4 x 3-3/4 x
57 x 2)
No big surprises here. From this simple test, I feel very
good about my decision to go with the larger remote filter. Anybody have a
K&N they want to cut apart and measure?
