Then only one pump is needed. The reasoning for this is that if the pump quits on climbout, the engine will likely quit very fast....by the time the average pilot realizes the cause and takes action (by turning on the alternate pump), it's very likely that the engine would already have quit. Restarting could get hairy at 100 feet. Just my opinion, and believe me....I could be wrong.
