I've never had a chance to see the Smithsonian's museum, but based on what I've read and heard from other folks, it's most certainly one of the top 3, if not #1. I also like the naval aviation museum in Pennsacola, another great place. I really enjoyed the museum at Warner Robbins, GA and would be happy to go back there any time. There are lots of smaller museums around the country that also have much to offer... the Kalamazoo (MI) Air Zoo was a very cool place, the EAA museum in Oshkosh, Fantasy of Flight just east of Lakeland on I4, the list goes on. Let's face it, if you're an airplane nut, going anyplace that has more than 3 airplanes on display and some glass cabinets with associated aviation stuff is always tons better than going to the mall. Just my 2c.
