Let's start by questioning your statement above. The word 'trust' carries a lot of emotional connotation. Emotion that seems misplaced in this instance.
My point is that we KNOW they work well as water coolers, what with so many people flying with them. But they have proven themselves very much less than satisfactory with the oil cooling. The big question is what is different between the two systems. If that can be answered, we'll know why they don't work and what parameters to specify for any other aftermarket oil cooler.
I believe it was you who mentioned that there might be harmonics caused by pressure pulses from the pump. Would it be possible to attach a fast responding pressure transducer in front of a stock cooler and connect it to a scope. Run the engine a look for suspect pressure pulses?
