I appreciate all the comments, support, and even abuse
<g>, but I feel like I need to clear up a misunderstanding. If I
sell the RV-3, it's not because I'm frustrated, and giving up on the
project. In fact, it's just the opposite. I originally decided
to use an RV-3 because I got it cheap, and if things didn't work out, I wouldn't
be out much money. All along, this has been more of an engine test mule,
than the airplane of my dreams. I'm completely satisfied that I can make
the rotary engine work, and this oil cooler incident has nothing to do with my
stated desire to eventually move the engine to a new plane.
The problem now is that I'll have to put in a LOT
of time and effort to get the RV-3 going again, primarily due to all the
changes I'd make along the way. Even when that's all done, I'm still stuck with
all the compromises of working in tight quarters, and it's still not the
plane I ultimately want the rotary in. I'd like to have flown the
plane for another year before moving on, but at this point, I think my
time would be better spent finishing the Slingshot to have something to
fly. Once that's done, I could either start working on a single rotor
for the SS, or an RV-7.
To Finn's question about what I'd charge for the plane,
engine, etc, I don't quite know. On one hand, I'd like to keep the
engine stuff, but on the other hand, by the time I would need it for an RV-7,
we'll be up to the auto programming EC-5, and maybe the EM-5 will finally have
data logging :-) In other words, I'm open to selling the entire project as
well, but again, this should not be construed as "giving up on the
rotary". My goal for the next plane would be to start from a
clean sheet, probably with a Renesis, so none of the stuff I've made for the
RV-3 would be useful anyway.
Cheers,
Rusty (no reasonable offer
refused)
