I seems unlikely that I would refer to an air cooled VW or Audi?  While talking about water pumps. But let me be more clear:

My 75 Rabbit and I believe the Audi Foxes and all of those similar models had free standing water pumps. Mine lasted the full 170 thousand miles and then the engine went into another car, because mine rusted into two pieces. It still had the original water pump on it. Not on moment of trouble from the engine. A bit from the Solex but it was an easy fix. Added a rubber tipped needle from a RX-2 carb and all was well again. I am painfully aware of air cooled VWs having built several hundred of the damn things. From 30 HP 1947 split window mechanical turn flags to the 411 based formula Continental race engines. This can be explained by a bad fall and head strike as a child.
