Hi guys,

Young Bill here is NEARLY 100% correct.  The main issue is that ALL Mazda Rotary Engines EXCEPT the Renesis have a diagonal rear main oil drain towards the sump on the inlet/exhaust side.  The front drain is at the bottom of the stationary gear,  so it can drain either way,  and the centre housing is not too fussed which way it drains either as it has the filler hole on the plug side.  So the main issue is the rear housing main bearing drain.

HOWEVER,  the Renesis engine,  which has the side exhaust ports where this drain channel normally is,  so the clever little Hiroshima Elves have the drain going diagonally down to the sump on the PLUG side.  This means that should you want to run "Plugs Down",  you CAN do it with a Renesis engine!  But ONLY with a Renesis engine!

I can see a certain "gentleman" at that other place having kittens over this.  A "Plugs Down" winsto ould certainly solve many of the inlet/exhaust/cowl clearance problems.  While I have been convalescing,  the thought had crossed my addled brain on more than one occasion!

Cheers,

Leon

I don't think the oil can drain out of the rotors if you go plugs down. Plugs  up-- yes, down-- no.

- Where can I get a single rotor eccentric shaft?  I'm thinking that the only ones running now were cut down from 13B shafts, which I understand is a mighty tough job.

- Folks have done plugs-up engines, but has anyone ever done a plugs-down engine?  Do you see any reason why it wouldn't work as well as plugs-up?  Having the intake and exhaust on top would be the best arrangement, but it won't be possible to do this unless I can get a planetary drive unit to keep the prop in the center of the engine.
