You may be able to check with a local company
in your area for anodizing. I did about a year ago here in Huntsville, AL,
and they wanted $50 to 'hard' anodize the engine plate. They did ask if I
wanted the soft or hard anodizing. The soft provides less protection, is
easier to plate, and costs less ($40). The 'hard' anodizing was supposed
to provide a more durable finish that is less likely to scratch as you do your
maintenance, and adds a little more strength to the surface of the plate.
They mentioned the plate finish would look the same as before plating, so be
sure the finished surface is what you want.
I ended up trying the clear
500 degree engine paint Walmart sells for about $4 per can. It turned out
well; in fact I used the plate as part of a fixture for welding my 4130 engine
mount and found it held up unbelieveably well near flames. I was sure I
would have to repaint it, but it came through unscathed.
