I don't know any other details, but it's what the engineer who designed the engine recommends for use with these particular magnesium components.  The inside of the manifold is coated (looks like hi-temp orange primer to me) and the sealant only stuck to the manifold and not the ground surfaces of the heads.  The sealant's only purpose appears to be to gasket the areas between and below the (intake & coolant) ports to seal the top of the block from the elements.  You can kind of see the sealed area in the o-ring photo I sent along earlier.
