John,
Kind
of alond this line, I used to have a car that if I overfilled the oil, by even
1/2 qt. It would lose oil pressure, and give a warning
light.
I did
this a couple of times, and always after an oil change. I finannly learned
to put in 4 1/2 qts instead of all 5.
I
beleive that the excess oil caused the engine to beat the oil into a foam, which
didn't pick up or pump very well. I could shut the engine off, let it sit
a few minutes, and everything was fine on start up again. At least for a
while.
I
don't know if the rotary engine is subject to this problem, but it came to mind
while reading about your problem.

Hi
John;
Sorry to hear things didn't go well, but at least you got
down without bending anything. There's been some good suggestions as to the
cause, and I particularly would suspect the oil pickup tube and this is likely
where I'd start, but while you're in there, you should inspect the front cover
oil ring. If the oil ring is blown out, you may find a piece of it in your oil
pan, or I believe you should be able to look up from the bottom with the oil
pan removed to see the location where the o-ring joint is. In my case the
o-ring was squeezed out (blown out) and should be visible from below. Unless
you've got one of them engine mounts with the plate sandwiched between the
engine & pan.
In any event, if you remove the pan and find no problems
with the suction tube, then you should proceed to the the front cover o-ring
as you will already have removed all the front cover to oil pan
bolts.
