    Sorry to hear things didn't go well, but at least you got down without bending anything. There's been some good suggestions as to the cause, and I particularly would suspect the oil pickup tube and this is likely where I'd start, but while you're in there, you should inspect the front cover oil ring. If the oil ring is blown out, you may find a piece of it in your oil pan, or I believe you should be able to look up from the bottom with the oil pan removed to see the location where the o-ring joint is. In my case the o-ring was squeezed out (blown out) and should be visible from below. Unless you've got one of them engine mounts with the plate sandwiched between the engine & pan.
    In any event, if you remove the pan and find no problems with the suction tube, then you should proceed to the the front cover o-ring as you will already have removed all the front cover to oil pan bolts.
