Just as a heads up, I noticed some "lag" during acceleration after an extended ~75% power (~4700 rpm) run (exactly 1 hour and 12 minutes). It also drank double the fuel to go the same distance than when at 50% power... What I noticed was that after pulling off of the highway (this is a stock 2003 Impreza Outback Sport with 49000 Km on it) on to the backwood roads, that acceleration (with shifts at red line) was not as snappy or smooth through the power band with a number of "dead" spots (pull was noticeably less) going through 3800 and 5700 rpm. These where noticed at the five stop signs between the highway and my local watering hole. I have been purposely pounding this engine on the ground to see how it will fair in the air under the same conditions. I have already done the same thing to an RX-7 engine (1981 GSL) and have never had this happen. The RX-7 never changed in performance at any time (it got a 12 hour run with only fuel stops) and ran to 218000 miles (not Km) before I finally blew it up (even then it still ran). There is going to be an oil change this weekend, so I'll let you know if there is any "burnt" smelling oil in there, that would indicate that there may be some internal hot spots. So far, I think I am leaning towards the rotary for engine choice...
