What happens to this mixture setting in the aircraft fuel tank for extended
time periods? Is a 5 minute "wing rock" a preflight
requirement:) Thanks, Randy
So far, I
haven't noticed any problems with the oil trying to settle out. The
only time I ever had a problem was when I had an empty tank, then put
15 oz of oil in it and taxied down to the fuel pump (running off the
other tank). I filled the tank, and figured that taxing back to the hanger
would be enough to mix it. The next time I sumped the tank as part
of my pre-flight, what I got in the tester was almost straight oil. I
just poured it back in the tank, and kept doing that until I was getting
fuel from the sump. I also rolled the plane forward and back a bit to
finish mixing it up. Originally, I thought the oil had settled out, but
later I realized that it had just never been
mixed.
The best
lesson here was to realize that if the oil does happen to settle out, it
will collect at the drain valve, and I'll see it when I sump the tanks
during pre-flight.
