I'm rebuilding my own engine, and I can say I was QUITE meticulous in measuring clearances, and would never envision NOT replacing required parts. As a matter of fact, just to be thorough, when the rebuild occurs, I plan to have two others who have a vested interest in the aircraft there, along with the manuals, the tape and we will re-assemble according to instructions.
 
With the exception of having Bruce rebuild it, the "pro" approach doesnt seem quite as attractive
