I took off the exhaust manifold and, sure enough, two of the seals are shiny and spring back about 1/16 inch when you press them (hard). The other seal is intact, but not shiny and only springs back maybe 1/32 when pushed. It IS moving, so it's not a stuck seal - sounds like the side seals are gone. We'll know more when the Mazda guy gets the engine comes apart...... 
 
Oh man, another kick in the groin...  Sorry to hear about that.    
 
As Ed said, if it's not shiny, that's the problem. There is still a slim chance that the groove has some carbon or something that's formed around the edge, and is keeping the seal from springing all the way out.  I would absolutely spend some time trying to free this apex seal, before even thinking about having the engine torn down.  What have you got to lose?  
 
If you do tear it down, go ahead and order some of those seals that Tracy's selling Turbo Boy.  I wonder if he would warrantee them against "John Slade"... Nay, he's smarter than that :-)
