Air in the cooling system can sneak up on you if you are not watching the temperature carefully. I had more than one opportunity( before I learned to burp the engine) to listen to the snap,crackle and pop of an overheated engine as it cooled. Did you happen to notice your oil temps? With cooling not doing its job the oil temp may have been up as well carrying some of the heat load.
