Thank you for explanation of MONSTER prop...
With reference to Tracy's new monster prop I suppose it is the one that almost ran him off the runway on first tryout. And Ed and perhaps others are getting even more monstrous props. Greedy, greedy...be very careful people.
Yvon.

Hi Yvon

Had not heard from you in so long, I was afraid you were no longer a Rotary Flier.

Ref Monster Prop.  Most of us flying RV series aircraft have been using a propeller that was around 68" in diameter and 72" in pitch or 68x72.  When Tracy Crook changed his gear box ratio from 2.17:1 to 2.85:1 the torque at the prop end of the gear box was considerably increase but turned slower.  Tracy figured that turning slower meant a larger diameter prop was necessary to provide the same thrust and then he decided that with that much more of a torque increase he could also have more pitch.  Therefore, he went from a 68x72 prop to a 74x88 prop, I am going to try a 76x88 or a propeller that is 8" longer than my previous propeller and with 16" more pitch.  Therefore the reference to a Monster (LARGE) propeller.

Tracy reports tremendous increase in take off acceleration and climb.  He reported still having 1600 fpm climb at 10,000MSL!.  If I can get 2000 fpm at sea level, I'll be happy with it.

So several of us decided to following in his foot steps.

Good to hear from you.  How are things going??

Great to hear, Rusty.  Looks like the 2.85 is going to get some additional data point soon.

Well, Laura, shipped my drive Friday, so should be here today or tomorrow.  Already have the monster prop, now awaiting a new spinner for prop.  Cleaning up my software for the EFI fuel monitor, finished the self-calibration routine and now need to find an LCD small enough to fit in a 2 1/4" instrument case and still readable from across the cockpit.

I just got the tracking number for my monster prop today, and it should be here Friday.  Tracy's shipping my C drive tomorrow, and he shipped the software updates today.  Won't be long now :-)
