Bob, I would agree completely. A great and civil discussion w/ many views and opinions. No boasting is assumed, only the benifit of one who has experianced something that many other [myself included] could only dream of.

I'd noted that you felt more comfortable in the jets and from there [knowing the Stall issues w/ the F16] was just looking at the comparison of stall behaviour. As I understand it if you stall the F16 to a point [w/ it's Aft CG] it becomes fairly difficult to recover. I've read accounts of such 'departures' happening and the hair raising exeriance of trying to recover. The assumption is that some of these accounts would be w/ some poetic license, but the underlying premise is that they CAN be a bear if stalled incorrectly.  These airframes are certainly a long ways from the Lancair family. I fly an aircraft corporatly that has [basically] the same performance spec's [speed] as a 'factory' IV [285knt @ 240] however I can carry a few more people than a IV, on the lower end of the spectrum it stalls down in the 85knt range depending on weights etc. So one can have their cake and eat it if one really wants to. [ie; not every plane that 'performs' in cruis e has to be a dangerous slow speed flyer; or said another way, not every plane that is safe/docile in the slow speed range has to be a dog in the high speed range]

The subject line above [not sure where it came from] is a bit of a mis-nomer in that I don't think there is any FIXING that needs to be done w/ the IV. I was talking w/ John H. offline about this, I think there is some that think I'm pushing for a change in the wings or tail or whatever to make the airframe safer.  Maybe others are pushing this point, it certainly isn't my basis. I think there is some TUNING that could be done to improve the slow flight [approach to stall only] areas of the envelope. Primarily I'm looking at approach to stall buffet and wing drop. Both of these should be able to be tuned w/ the simple use of stall strips or in the worst case [really worst case, which I think would be rare] the resetting of the wing incidence due to builder error etc.  At best, the addition of a simple stall strip or control surface rigging should give the onset buffet as well as elliminate wing drop in the approach to stall and initial recovery areas. Both of these steps should be relatively easy to impliment [cost and time wise].

You'd noted that you slowed to onset [I assume this to mean pre-stall buffet] during your pre-buy and then recovered.  THIS is all I'm promoting as a point of reference in flight testing. There are many [if I'm reading these emails correctly] who have NEVER done that very step in flight testing their airframes. In no way am I advocating using any Lancair for aerobatics or advanced training [stall/spin] of any sort. Nor would it need to be something that one should be doing on a daily or even weekly basis, every 6mo or a year maybe, but only as a step in recurrency training.  I agree that these planes are built for 'going places' and are well suited in that area of the envelope. I just wish more would do the 'approach to stall' tests during their flight tests, rather than "slow down to a number that looks slow and then speed up ".  The problem w/ doing the approach to stall is that in some planes [as I understand it] there is no warning to the stall, it just happens and more often than not, it includes a wing drop. Hence my pondering of a 'group shared' spin chute for testing.

I think there is a bit of a incorrect belief that all of these kit planes are geometrically the same and will perform the same because they came from the same molds. From my experiance and what I've read here, this is far from the truth. Each airframe is an individual, they each have their own querks and issues. Having to re-tune them aerodynamically is something that should be expected as a nesc step in flight testing. From what I've been reading there is a large number of owners who do-not-do this step but rather leave anything that would be 'aerodynamics' to the assumption that 'it will be right' [or 'alright'], I believe this to be a larger part of this 'don't investigate the low speed range' mindset. I believe it is our responsibility to work w/ the aerodynamics and tune the airframe, to avoid this step [dealing w/ the aerodynamics] because it is not our expertise is the same as 'not building an airplane because it should be done by perfessionals', we know we can build t hese airplanes, we can also tune them to behave.

I can't speak for 737 pilots but I can tell you in my corporate plane that I drive, I have [and am required to regularly] demonstrate approach to stall in the actual airplane while doing recurrency training. In the certified airframe its not a big deal, you slow down look for and find the needed indicators and recover. This isn't happening in the larger community of Lancair drivers which is the root of my concern.

Anyway, thanks for the great response, it's wonderful when these discussions can be as light and easy as this has. There will be never be a final conclusion to the question, at least not until the last Lancair stops flying and that could be a while. Until then, it will keep coming back to be discussed and then left for time. 

At the end of it all, fly safe and come home alive. It's all that matters.
