I have = found that the planes are much more stable with a strake and are = recommended. I however do not recommend the Mike Custard strake as it = adds quite a bit of drag to the airplane as they are not aligned with = the airflow very well. The best solution is a simple single straight = down strake of at least 8 1/2 inches at the rudder intersection. This = produces no drag and stops more yaw than Mikes double strake. It is possible to have a good configuration without a strake as I have = flown one that did not require it at all. This was a Lancair firewall = forward version. I converted my normally aspirated Lancair IV to a Turbine. The airplane = flew great before the conversion but with the turbine I experienced some = attention getting tail wagging especially on take off in gusty = conditions. After a considerable number of failed attempts to correct = this issue I bought a Mike Custard strake and installed it. The strake = eliminated my problem with no other modifications needed. I highly recommend that you look at this solution. I believe you will = be most satisfied.
