RTV is about $4-5 per tube at WallyWorld,
Lowes, Home Depot, etc…why buy $30 worth when you need to wet the end of a
toothpick??

the IV-P
Hi Bob,
I think the response
from Mr. Rickard may have originated from this posting in 2010. I have a
pinhole leak in my door seal – never flown yet - I hope to repair it next
weekend using the advice given below by Mr. Heizer. Good luck with yours.
By the way, the RTV is about $30 plus shipping from Aircraft Spruce – smallest
quantity available. Maybe you’d like to hold off until I’m done and I’ll
ship the stuff to you after I’m sure I’ve got it fixed. Not too sure what
the shelf life is for the stuff but don’t think it would be good to keep it
around for years so might be better to pass it on.

The door seal on my ES-P has sprouted several pinhole
leaks in the region where the two ends of the tubing are joined
together. I contacted the manufacturer, and was told the seal is made
from layers of dacron and silicon. This repair procedure is my
adaptation of what he told me about fixing leaks
Lightly sand around the area of the leak
Clean area with acetone
Poke some rtv silicone into the pinhole. I've found that a toothpick
works well. I've been using DOW 3145 adhesive/sealant.
Let the rtv fully cure
Inflate the doorseal with the door open, keep inflated for the following
steps
Spread a small amount of rtv around the area of the repair, and press a small
patch of peelply into the rtv
Spread a bit more rtv over the top of the peelply to seal the peelply and its
edges. An ice cube works well to smooth out the rtv & peelply combo
Keep the seal inflated while the silicone dries
The initial poking of the rtv into the pinhole fixes the leak. The
application of peelply keeps the inflation/deflation cycles from reopening
the pinhole.
I've repaired numerous pinhole leaks in my plane's seal; these repairs have
lasted so far for 200 flying hours...no pinhole has reopened yet.

Subject: [LML] Re: Door Seal on
the IV-P
I had this same issue on mine. Jeff taught me how to get a bit of
clear silicone in the hole with a toothpick. It works for a month or 2,
then it fails and you repeat. Painful when you are at 210! Anyway
I put up with it for a while and then got a new one installed by the RDD boys
in Redmond.
Gentlemen,
I just completed the third condition inspection on
N437RP at 680 hours TT. The airplane is in excellent condition; I found no
cracks or structural problems at all, but could use some help with two issues.
If anyone has a breakdown drawing of the main gear
actuator for the IV/IV-P, I’d really like to have a copy. My right main gear
actuator has developed a small hydraulic leak around the downlock
pin that sticks out of the top of the actuator base. I constructed the airplane
with a removable top to the wheelwell, so I can stand
up in the wheelwell and access the rear of this
actuator, but the space is tight. I suspect the downlock
pin is held down by a rather strong spring, so removing the circlip
that retains the assembly without a clamp or tool would probably result in not
being able to reinstall it. If you have any experience with servicing this
seal, or removing the whole actuator, I’d appreciate any advice.
Second problem: I have a small pin hole in the
“sidewall” of my door pressure seal. It’s so small that the seal will retain
pressure for a short period, causing the pressurization pump to cycle on every
few seconds. I would like to hear from anyone that’s tried to patch such
a hole.
Many thanks in advance,
Bob Pastusek
