Scott: My hangar has the remnants of several attempts at designing the
perfect intake system for my 360.I think about four or five trys. What I
ended up with and which is still subject to minor change is this.I
retrofited my airplane with the longer engine mount and had to also
replace the cowl.I have the forward facing injector with air flow
performance 90 degree elbow. This arrangement makes the fuel system hang
down quite alot so  Lancair offers a deep cowl splash for the the cowl
bottom which accommodates this system very well.It also allows more room
in the cowl and behind the engine mount. No more prop governor buried in
the firewall.Anyway..... I built the bottom splash to be romovable(very
handy)one of the benefits of that is I could build a pressure box for
filtered ram air.(no wires or cables or flappers needed)I built a
retainer ring around the injector servo.I then built a split bulk head
that rides aginst the ring, allowing the bottom to be taken off for
service(oil change ect)I used a K&N Round filter used on Racing go karts
that fit perfectly onto a flanged bolted to the face of the injector
servo and held in place with  a 3 in. hose clamp. The air is rammed into
the front of the cowl splash through a wire mesh screen to keep the
elephants out.The K&N filter is round and sealed on the end.All that
goes to the engine is fitered ram air.I used this same filter with a ram
air door that I could remotley open with a cable.I could not tell any
difference in manifold pressure when it was open so that is what led me
to the current system. The only thing that I think would make this
perfect  is an alternate air door for  the off chance that the intake
opening in the front of cowl got  blocked(possibley from sucking a spam
can through your induction system, don't laugh it could happen(G)I get
about 1 in.of manifold pressure from ram at altitude. At take off I see
about .2 in loss from the filter until air starts packing in and it is
onward and upward from there. If I can get my scanning program out of
intensive care anytime soon I will attach some drawings(crude at best
and maybe a photo or two to Marv for your viewing pleasure.Happy
thoughts
