Hi all, just want to say hello and thanks to all here who contribute. I
am only in the phase of deciding whether and when to start building a
Legacy, but all the information available here is a really great source
of confidence that it CAN be done... Anyway, let me get to what I really
wanted to say...

I too laughed about the diesel mentioned above, but there is actually an
aero-diesel under development in Europe... I'm sure there are similar
experiments in the US as well, but the engine I talk about (the TAE 110)
just got it's JAA certification. It's a straight 4, 1.7 Liter direct
injection diesel, turbocharged, fully digital single stick FADEC & prop.
Even though it only delivers a nominal  125HP, it compares extremely
well with an IO-320; it is being tested in a Taifun with a Muehlbauer
constant speed prop and delivers 237Kg push at standstill, compared to
210Kg from a PA-28-161... As it's turbo-charged, it compares even better
at altitude to the non-normalized IO-320 (what a surprise, I know...).
Before anyone asks; it weighs 184Kg firewall-forward, which is a few
pounds less than the Lycoming unit. For me this unit or one of it's
successors might be very interesting because of all this, plus it will
run on auto-diesel and kerosine, and uses a lot less of it too (in some
instances only 1/3 of the IO-320 FF). Sure, this is partly due to a CS
prop, but nonetheless there is some real progress being made. TBO will
likely be 3000 Hrs, although it apparently will be more of a TBR.
The company developing this unit is called Thielert Aircraft Engines in
Liechtenstein/Europe. Anyone in Europe should get a look at the current
(April) issue of the german Aerokurier Magazine for more details, or
just come to AERO at Friedrichshafen/Germany at the end of this month...

Cheerio,

Kai.
