Rob,
I've seen both methods used. I personally wanted to minimize the
amount of structure I had to remove. I relieved the BL50 rib on the
outboard wing panel outer core to accomodate the Skysports fuel probe. I
glassed in the metal mounting plate supplied with the probe. I also
drilled two small holes so I can adjust the low/high levels on the probe.
It works great. I wouldn't change a thing.
However, I've seen some builders leave the outboard wing BL50 rib
alone, a bore a 3" hole in the BL50 rib on the stub wing. Looks a little
drastic to me but it seems to work for them.
