In addition to Brent's excellent comments, another very easy way to get nice
holes in stainless is to use a plasma cutter. Any thermally conductive metal
can be nicely cut with a plasma cutter, and I imagine that the thickness you are
talking about, even a body shop plasma cutter would do the job. The thermal
distortion is minimal and the edges look laser cut. I use a larger unit to cut
1/2 plate at 25 inches per minute, and it makes prep time for welding a thing of
the past.
