Lancair originally supplied (circa 1989) a heat muff for the type 5 exhaust (320, front mounted throttle body) with an extra hot air exit for carburetor heat. Since the engine was injected, I had a heat muff made with a 1.5 inch entry at the bottom and a 1.5 inch exit at the top and on the opposite side as I had a report that air entry/exit on the same side didn't produce much heat (the cold air was short circuited). Cold air was taken from the left front horizontal baffle in front of Cyl 2 (above the landing light). The valve works perfectly for my installation. On the cabin side of the firewall, I have a fiberglass tee that sends 1 inch of air to the copilot footwell and 1 inch to the pilot side. This has supplied heat adequate down to about -10 degree F. In warmer temperatures, the valve is only partially open and I usually open an upper outside air vent for cool breathing air. My friend (Wisc, Lancair 360) complained for two years that he wasn't getting much heat in the winter and he had to dis-connect the system in the summer because some heat came thru even when the valve was "off". One cold day I was present when he had the cowling removed and noted that he had the valve set up wrong. He had the hot air enter from the front and tried to "wastegate" unused air to the side. This will not work. Hot air must enter the side and unused air must exit the front. If you are having a heat problem, check this out.
