Given the number of conflicting reports regarding Poly Fiber's UV Smooth
Prime I decided to send an email to the Poly Fiber folks to ask them about
the situation and see what the "company line" is on this issue. The
following is a reply I received from them this morning:
>>>
Mr. Kaye,
We introduced Pre-Prime Sealer for exactly the problem of shrinkage
into pin holes. We don't feel that our products shrink any more or less
than other solvent borne products, although our knowledge of the rest of
the market is based on builder reports rather than our own testing. We
concentrate on testing our own products rather than running a consumer
reports service.
Finishing pre-pregs is a fairly new art. There is not much data over
the years on shrinkage into pinholes, especially into pinholes with foam or
nomex core materials.
There has been no reformulation of UV Smooth Prime. Our testing led
us to believe that plugging the pinhole with epoxy at the initial stage of
filling was the answer. Thus Pre Prime Sealer.
Thanks,
Jon Goldenbaum <info@polyfiber.com>

The Pre-Prime sealer that Mr. Goldenbaum mentions is apparently a fairly
new product and its use with the PF system is outlined in the Flight Gloss
manual that is available from the company for the asking
(800-362-3490). (This is a very nice little manual, BTW, and one that I'd
recommend reading even if you decide not to use the PF Flight Gloss
system... lots of interesting information in there.) I'm planning on
picking some Pre-Prime up from a local distributor and will report on its
use after I've tried it out.
I hope this helps shed a little light on this interesting and non-toxic
finishing system.
