Use automotive alternators only if you install hi altitude brushes.
Breakdown level means nearly nothing here.  The brushes ride on slip rings
and have no other gap they could possibly jump given that contact.  What
they will do is vanish in a very short amount of time leaving you in a bind.
Even in VFR a failed alternator will cause you to abort your destination for
the closest airport, shed load and have all the girls in the back very
upset.  Don't do it!  It's dumb.
