A most successful holiday vacation.  The canopy plexiglass is now hysolled in 
place (builder tips to follow later), and the engine is now hung on the 
mount.  It hardly looks like the same project!  I'm now starting to dog 
paddle my way thru the firewall-forward end of the Lancair builder's pool.

I'm laying out the firewall components in their entirety prior to drilling 
any holes thru the firewall.  I'm trying to get my battery mounted to the 
firewall (on the hot side) and it's pretty close to the oil filter.  Today's 
question is "how much clearance is needed between the oil filter -- which is 
attached to the engine and therefore moves in flight -- and firewall mounted 
components?"

The battery in question is a B&C Specialties recombinant gas 32 amp-hour 
battery.  It is the same size as a G-25 battery but has a few more electrons 
packed inside.  Bill Bainbridge of B&C has "approved" (as it were) 
rack-mounting this battery to the engine side of the firewall, though he 
suggests a thin metal shield against radiated heat to prolong battery life.  
The plan is to pop rivet thin aluminum sheets to the battery rack's sides, or 
maybe just use aluminum tape. 

The engine in question is an IO-360-B1F, which has an aft-mounted oil filter 
situated so that it's spin axis is aligned with the airplane longudinal axis. 
 (i.e., it screws on the back and the open end points forwards...)

I can mount the battery and have 3/8 - 7/16 inch clearance between the side 
of the filter and the battery.  I have, on the other side, 1/8 inch clearance 
between the battery and the nearest engine mount tube.  Side to side motion 
of the oil filter is of concern, but vertical motion is not a problem.  The 
question is simply how much clearance is needed.

There is a fall-back position here.  A remote oil filter solves the problem.  
I'm just trying to avoid the cost and the weight of the remote system.
